Hillyer's Ju-Yong Ha Has Article Published in Top International Journal on Ethnomusicology

Hillyer College Assistant Professor of Music Ju-Yong Ha had an article published recently in The World of Music (New Series), one of the leading international journals in ethnomusicology. “I am a New Yorker:” Localization, Globalization and Korean Community Arts in New York City, vol. 11 (2022) 1, pp. 63-86. 

Ha’s article focuses on transnationalism and interculturality and the presence of Korean music in New York City over the last 40 years. Korean music began with traditional immigrant musicians, followed by a move to embrace the spirit of globalization and intercultural performance, and finally bringing local and international musicians together, creating opportunities for new interpretations of old traditions. Throughout these phases, the interdependency and collaboration among Korean and non-Korean musicians has strengthened the Korean cultural presence in New York and contributed to a vibrant new soundscape.
