DEIJB Pulse Faculty and Staff Survey

Submitted By: Christine Grant

Dear UHart Community Member:

Over the past four years, the University has made tremendous strides in the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice. The University's commitment to DEIJ is evident in its Strategic Action Plan as outlined in goal three to promote a vibrant, diverse, inclusive, and socially just community. Feedback from faculty and staff is crucial in the review and implementation of policies, procedures, and programming.

As such, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement (ODECE) will seek to gather a collective voice from faculty and staff by conducting a campus-wide DEIJB Pulse survey later this fall. The survey is designed to capture experiences and perceptions regarding inclusion and belonging. The results will be positioned to promote a safer, more equitable, and inclusive UHart community.

To provide some historical context, in 2019, a climate assessment was conducted with faculty and staff. The results have strongly informed the ongoing work of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement and The President’s Steering Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

To follow up on the survey done in 2019, ODECE collaborated with a group of faculty and staff to design a DEIJB Pulse survey specifically for all UHart employees. Before the survey is distributed to all University employees, a pilot will first be administered where approximately 180 (randomly selected) employees will be invited to participate. An invitation to participate in the pilot will be emailed in early October. The purpose of participating in the pilot is to provide feedback to the committee on the survey instrument; the responses collected during the pilot will not be counted in any reporting. The survey will be re-evaluated at the completion of the pilot. The week of November 1, all faculty and staff—including those who participate in the pilot—will receive an email invitation to complete the DEIJB Pulse survey; we encourage your engagement in this process.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement will seek to be transparent and will share the aggregated results from the survey in late spring 2023. The findings will be used as an accountability measure for goal three in the Strategic Action Plan to promote a vibrant diverse, inclusive, and socially just UHart community.

We would like to acknowledge the DEIJB Pulse Survey Committee:
