Thanks to the generous research support of The Women's Advancement Initiative and the J. Holden Camp Faculty Fellowship, Hillyer College Associate Professor of Sociology Karen Tejada has published an article in the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies, one of the leading journals in the study of immigrant populations across the globe. The article, 'Because I'm a Fighter': Examining Salvadoran Women's Leadership Toolkit, uses intersectionality as a conceptual framework to capture the lived experiences of 20 Salvadoran women residing in the Washington, D.C. metro area. To underscore the agentic lives of Salvadoran women, Tejada demonstrates how power, conflict, and resistance become embedded in the process to gain "recognition" as community leaders. Tejada was a Humanities Center Fellow in 2020 where she discussed some of her research insights and will now be leading the 2022-23 Humanities Center Lecture Series on a topic entitled, "Decolonizing the University: Ethnic Studies through Time".
