Submitted By: Karen Gantt

Karen Gantt, Associate Professor of Business Law in the Barney School, was an invited speaker at the Historic Black Towns and Settlements Alliance Conference held on Oct. 13 – 15, in Prairie View, Texas. The Alliance represents towns established by people of African descent between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. The conference focused on preserving these historically significant places and transforming them into cultural destinations. Professor Gantt’s talk concentrated on land loss and recovery. She shared stories of land loss, government policies, and other factors shaping the disparity in land and homeownership today. She also discussed recent developments related to descendent reclamation of property.
