The Humanities Center is happy to announce the ninth and final talk in its Fall 2022 Lecture Series on Ethnic Studies on Monday, Nov. 28, from 12:45 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies. The talk is free and open to the university community.

Dakota NantonAssistant Professor of Cinema (A&S), will give a lecture called "How Film History Lied to You: Ethics, Diversity and the Art of Cinema”. Whose perspectives have been left out of mainstream films? What does it mean to depict acts of violence? What responsibility does the audience hold? By asking questions such as these, it is his goal to look at the steps needed to reconceptualize the film history canon (away from an emphasis upon white, male directors toward a more expansive canon that includes directors of color, female directors, and queer filmmakers) and, from there, the ways in which creators and consumers of media can take more accountability in the stories with which they interact.

The Ethnic Studies Lecture Series is possible due to the Cardin Grant, funding received from the A&S dean’s office. The series features talks by nine UHart professors in the humanities whose research and teaching focus on racialized ethnic groups in the U.S. For more information on the series, contact Nicholas Ealy, director of the Humanities Center: ealy@hartford.edu
