Submitted By: Karen Cook

On Thursday, Nov. 3, Hartt Associate Professor of Music History Karen Cook participated in a panel organized at Trinity College to discuss alternative grading practices. The organizers at Trinity College invited Cook to speak on her experiences using "un-grading" throughout the last few years of teaching at the undergraduate level. Cook spoke to the ways in which she constructs some of her undergraduate courses around the principles of un-grading and self-grading, shifting away from traditional quizzes and exams toward a more comprehensive skills-based experience in which students can revise, expand on, and improve their work over the course of the semester. "Allowing students numerous opportunities to reflect on their own progress, learning experiences, interests, and setbacks," Cook says, "also creates an atmosphere in which students are more deeply invested in the material, the tasks at hand, and their overall improvement."
