School of Communication
The School of Communication offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in cinema or a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication. A Master of Arts degree in communication is also offered, as well as a combined BA and MA program in communication, known as the Accelerated Master’s Program.
Students in our program learn how to analyze film and how to make their own original films. Our majors are immersed in viewing, discussing, writing about, and making films.
A broad foundation in film theory, history, and analysis is complemented by a more in-depth examination of films from particular genres, themes, directors, or nations in a broad variety of film studies courses. Students develop an understanding of film as a form of art and commercial culture. They analyze elements of a film like camera shots, editing and sound. They learn about the history of film and distinctive styles of film from different historical periods. Faculty are dynamic and engaged teachers that have written extensively about film in their scholarship. Film studies courses are small, often 20 students or less, which fosters more vibrant class discussion and individual attention from faculty.
Cinema students can take courses in a variety of other programs at the University of Hartford that complement their own interest in film and filmmaking, including courses in:
- Drama and creative writing in the Department of English
- Web-design in the Multimedia Web Design program
- Photography, visual communication design, and media arts in the Hartford Art School
The cinema program provides a solid foundation for a variety of careers in film and media, as well as other professions. Our graduates have achieved success in many different impressive jobs.

Our advertising and public relations program prepares students with the knowledge for advertising, public relations and marketing positions. Writing, analysis, and research skills are developed across the full range of coursework. And our students produce portfolio-level work for local clients in our campaigns classes and by participating in national competitions sponsored by the American Advertising Federation and the Public Relations Student Society of America.
College graduates who have effective communication skills and knowledge of communication processes will be qualified for a variety of employment options. Our communication studies emphasis is designed to enhance students’ skills in group collaboration and leadership, conflict management, team presentations, persuasion, and adapting to communication media. These skills are valuable for entry-level positions and beyond in corporate training, human resources, sales, corporate and employee communications, and management as well as being in demand at non-profit organizations and agencies. In addition, coursework in communication studies helps students understand essential processes such as verbal and nonverbal communication, conflict, and persuasion.
The media and journalism emphasis prepares students to launch a career in news or entertainment or other media industries. They learn how the media operate, what their role and impact in our society is, and discover how changing technology alters existing media and creates new forms. In addition, students enhance their skills in producing messages for a variety of media outlets along with skills in analysis and critique of media. We offer coursework in television and radio production, multimedia, media criticism, sports journalism and sports television, and broadcast and print journalism.
The Master of Arts requires 33 credit hours plus the completion of a thesis or written comprehensive exam. Conveniently scheduled in the evenings, our classes have a rich mixture of traditional full-time graduate students and working professionals taking a class or two each term. In addition to the two required courses, CMM 650 Seminar in Communication and CMM 655 Communication Research Methods, students can take courses in media, human communication studies, and/or integrated communication. The flexibility of the program enables students to create an individualized program of study.
This program allows a University of Hartford student to complete both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in communication in five years rather than the six years it would take if the degrees were pursued consecutively and on a full-time basis. The program is designed for exceptional undergraduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and who know in their junior year that they wish to pursue a master’s degree.
