Four Hawks Garner All-New England Honors at Track Championship
The University of Hartford men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the 2010-11 indoor season at the New England Championship, a two-day event held at Boston University. Four Hawks raced to All-New England performances in five events while a pair of school records were broken. In a field of 35 scored teams, the men placed 18th overall while the women finished 31 overall out of 34 teams that scored.
Junior Andrew Chalmers headlined the weekend for the Hartford men when he grabbed All-New England honors in a pair of distance events. In the 3,000-meter run, Chalmers turned in the fourth-best time (8:32.68) while shaving more than four seconds off of his personal-best and school-record time set last weekend at the America East Championship. He then went on to the 5,000-meter run where the Penacook, N.H., native scored sixth place when he crossed in 14:46.70.
Sophomore Ackeme Brown and junior Anderson Emerole, a pair of sprinters, also went on to garner All-New England honors for turning in top-eight finishes in their respective events. Brown's time of 7.09 in the 60-meter dash secured sixth place in the finals on Saturday. After winning his heat and ranking fourth overall in the 400 preliminaries, Emerole went on to record a time of 48.69 for fifth place in the event.
Priscilla Appiagyei and Marisa Poleto highlighted the Hartford women on Saturda with solid performances on the track. After scoring sixth in Friday's 400-meter preliminaries, Appiagyei , a sophomore, went on to place sixth in the finals, earning All-New England honors for the third time in her career with a time of 57.31, tying her own school record. Poleto impressed in the 800-meter run when she clocked in at 2:20.66, erasing her former school record of 2:21.04 set this season. The senior placed 26th overall.
