The University of Hartford track and field teams competed at the Colonial Relays, a three-day event held at William & Mary University that kicked off on March 31. Behind strong performances on the track, the men placed 23rd of 33 scored teams, breaking three school records along the way, while the women finished in 36th place out of a field of 40 scored teams.
In the 100, the Hartford men got a strong showing from Ackeme Brown. The sophomore ran a semifinal qualifying time of 11.44 to place 16th out of 41 runners in the preliminaries. In the next round, Brown improved his time to 11.41 for a 13th place finish.
Another pair of sprinters had impressive performances on the track as Warren Lane and Anderson Emerole each scored in the 400-meter run. Lane placed fifth, the Hawks’ highest finish at the Relays, with a time of 49.02 while Emerole turned-in a time of 49.17 for seventh place.
Junior Andrew Chalmers smashed the 5,000-meter school record with his time of 14:45.21, erasing the former record of 15:14.46 set last weekend by teammate Jonas Hampton. He placed 29th overall. Hampton also scored a new school record in the distance events when he bettered his 10,000-meter record by nearly 40 seconds. The senior finished in 31:45.65 and ranked 15th.
Also excelling on the track was the men’s 4x100 team which combined for a time of 42.60, a new school record, and claimed eighth place in the event in a field of 17. Brown, Lane, Chris Carr and Emerole helped erase the former record by two-tenths of a second.
Josh Ugwuneri, a sophomore, nearly missed scoring for the Hawks, coming in ninth place in the javelin throw with a mark of 52.77-meters.
For the Hartford women, Megan Barry scored when she posted a time of 38:39.86 in the 10,000-meter race. The rookie’s time was the seventh best in the event. In the 400-meter run, Priscilla Appiagyei, a sophomore, won her heat and ranked 11th overall (58.40) while rookie Alisha Beeman also placed 11th when she reached 35.38 meters in the javelin.
