University of Hartford men’s lacrosse goalie Scott Bement earned the final America East Player of the Week honor after leading the Hawks to a pivotal 10-6 win over the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday evening at Al-Marzook Field. The award for the week ending May 1 was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Bement, a junior, matched a season-best performance on Saturday when he made 14 saves on 20 UMBC shots on goal to lead the Hawks to the triumph. With the win, Hartford secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming America East Championship. The Canandaigua, N.Y. native held the Retrievers to two second half goals, including none in the third quarter, while scooping up four ground balls in the process.

After missing nine games due to an injury, Bement has returned to see time in six games this season. An America East All-Conference Second Team selection in 2010, he owns an 8.24 goals-against average and a .568 save percentage.

The Hawks, who earned their first postseason bid for the first time in eight years, closed out the 2011 regular season with a record of 9-6 posting the program’s best finish since 2003.
