Mars-Garrick Shares Native American Heritage With Youngsters
University of Hartford senior women’s basketball player Keyokah Mars-Garrick continued the tradition of Community Service among the women’s basketball team when she participated in a presentation on her Native American heritage on Friday at Israel Putnam Elementary School in Meriden, Conn.
Mars-Garrick spoke for an hour about the Narragansett Tribe, her childhood, and her background in Native American dance. Students had the chance to see Mars-Garrick’s handmade dance outfit, handmade jewelry, and other items from her family. Following a question-and-answer period on Native American culture with the more than 100 third graders, Mars-Garrick culminated the presentation by performing a traditional Eastern Blanket Dance.
The third grade students from Israel Putnam Elementary School had been studying the Native American culture over the past several weeks and Mars-Garrick’s presentation provided a real-life experience as a conclusion to the curriculum.
