Basketball Programs Give Back to Community
With the upcoming 2011-12 season still months away, several members of the University of Hartford men’s and women's basketball teams continued to volunteer their time and efforts over a recent weekend. The Hawks assisted at the 17th Annual Tabor House GIANT Tag Sale, a significant community event that benefits Hartford’s Tabor House and the city’s underserved population.
Throughout the weekend, members of the men’s and women's teams assisted in preparing for the tag sale by bringing items into the building and sorting them, and helped set up the silent auction display. The squads also facilitated cleaning up and monitored the exits of the building.
Tabor House, founded in 1990 by Sister Laura Herold of the Sisters of St. Joseph, consists of two Victorian homes in Hartford that provide a safe, loving home for formerly homeless people with AIDS and HIV. At Tabor House, residents learn to manage their medical conditions and continue with education or seek employment.
Last year’s GIANT Tag Sale netted a record $20,000 and also benefited the immigrant and impoverished populations of the inner city who need to outfit their residences with affordable items.
