John Carson, vice president of University relations, was quoted in a Hartford Courant article on Tuesday, Sept. 6, about the potential sale of the University’s Asylum Avenue campus to the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC). The flash flooding that impact the University on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 8 and 9, received a significant amount of media coverage, including this story along with a video and photos in the Hartford Courant, this story and video on WFSB-TV, this story and video on NBC Connecticut, and this video on WTNH News Channel 8. In addition, footage from the flooding appeared on stories on television news broadcasts across the country and was also featured on MSNBC and The Weather Channel.
The move-in process for new students, combined with the impact of Hurricane Irene, brought a number of television cameras to the University campus. Eyewitness News WFSB-TV broadcast live from the campus during its Saturday morning newscast on Aug. 27, and NBC Connecticut did news features from the campus for its Friday evening newscast on Aug. 26 and for its noon newscast on Saturday, Aug. 27. News 8 WTNH-TV also featured footage of flooded parking lots on campus on Sunday, Aug. 28. Hartford Hawks soccer standouts Jorge Rodriguez of Puerto Rico and Amelia Pereira of Portugal both took time off from playing with the men’s and women’s teams at the University to join their country’s national soccer teams. Their call-ups were noted in a Monday, Sept. 5, story in the Hartford Courant and in a Friday, Sept. 2 story in Soccer America’s College Soccer Reporter.
