Ellen Carey, associate professor of photography in the Hartford Art School, wrote an article for the fall/winter issue of Aperture magazine about her 2009 discovery of a signature hidden within a 1935 photo by Surrealist artist/photographer Man Ray.

Carey, a noted lens-based and photographic artist, made the discovery by holding Man Ray’s black and white self-portrait, Space Writings, up to a mirror.

The “Backstory” section of the current issue of Aperture features an article by Carey titled “At Play With Man Ray.” In the article, Carey writes about her discovery, about Man Ray’s playful approach to art, and about his use of identity as a central theme in his work.

“The artist cultivated an aura of mystery about his personal history and identity—an avant-garde form of the game hide-and-seek,” Carey writes.
