Alison Landolt '10 and Len Milling, associate professor of psychology, A&S, published a peer-reviewed article titled "The Efficacy of Hypnosis as an Intervention for Labor and Delivery Pain:  A Comprehensive Methodological Review" in Clinical Psychology Review.

The article describes a systematic review of empirical research on the use of hypnosis for relieving the pain associated with labor and delivery.

The review of controlled studies found that hetero-hypnosis and self-hypnosis were consistently more effective than standard medical care, supportive counseling, and childbirth education classes in reducing pain.  Other benefits included better infant Apgar scores and shorter Stage 1 labor.

The article is based on a psychology honors thesis prepared by Landolt under the direction of Milling. Landolt now attends the Psy.D. program in Clinical Psychology at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

Clinical Psychology Review is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes substantive reviews of topics germane to clinical psychology.
