After racking up three points and leading the Hawks to a 3-1 win over UMBC at Al-Marzook Field on Saturday evening in their lone match of the week, University of Hartford sophomore David Bernhardsson was tabbed the America East Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The accolade is the second weekly honor for the team this season as rookie Rohan Roye was tabbed the league's Rookie of the Week on Monday, September 12.

Bernhardsson, a forward, put his team on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute with his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage. The Tjorn, Sweden, native then set up classmate Anthony Santaga’s marker in the 57th minute to help Hartford pull ahead at 3-0 and eventually knock off the Retrievers, who were undefeated in their first five conference games.

Saturday’s win, which was the Hawks’ first this season in conference play, shifted Hartford ahead of Albany in the America East standings, where the squad is now tied for fifth with New Hampshire with five points apiece. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the 2011 America East Tournament, which begins with the quarterfinal round on Saturday, November 5.

Despite playing in just eight games this season, Bernhardsson has accumulated nine points and leads the America East with 1.12 points per game
