President Harrison to have Opinion Article in Sunday’s Hartford Courant
University President Walter Harrison has written an article for the “Opinion” section of this Sunday’s (Oct. 30) edition of the Hartford Courant that outlines the recent work done by the NCAA’s Committee on Academic Performance, which Harrison chairs. At its meeting this week, the NCAA board of directors voted to approve the Committee’s recommendation to establish standards for student-athlete graduation rates that colleges and universities must meet in order for their athletic teams to be eligible to compete in postseason tournaments.
“Our goal is to require all teams to attain a 50 percent graduation rate in order to be eligible to participate in NCAA tournaments. By establishing this threshold, we believe we will establish for once and for all that academic success is a first principle of college sports,” writes Harrison. He also notes that the requirement will be phased in over the next four years.
