ENHP's Diana LaRocco Presents on Leadership

Diana J. LaRocco, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, ENHP, is addressing the role of leadership in her area of expertise – early childhood/special education intervention. She delivered two professional presentations this fall.
In October 2011, LaRocco presented a research-based paper entitled "Understanding Leadership in Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): Voices from the Field" at the 42nd Annual Northeast Educational Research Association (NERA) held in Rocky Hill, Conn.
Given the complexities of providing intervention services and supports to families of infants and toddlers with disabilities from birth through 2 years of age, LaRocco believes building leadership capacity from within the Early Intervention Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C, is important. She conducted a qualitative survey of 44 identified leaders from seven states and various levels of the Part C program. Participants’ reports of effective leadership clustered into three areas: technical-functional knowledge that is unique to Part C, dispositions that are somewhat characteristic of leaders in other fields, and skills that cross disciplinary boundaries.
In November 2011, LaRocco presented at the 27th Annual International Conference on Young Children with Special Needs and Their Families. Her topic was "Leading in Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education: Learning and Transforming." LaRocco designed this presentation to actively build participants' understanding of the skills needed to lead rational, value-driven, and principle-centered teams, agencies, and organizations. She incorporates an exploration of the concept of leadership, helps participants identify their unique leadership expertise, and guides them in the development of a personal action plan.
