65 Hawks Honored by America East for Academic Success
The America East conference announced on Thursday that 632 of its fall student-athletes, which includes 65 Hartford student-athletes, were named to the Fall Honor Roll. Of the Hawks 65 honorees, 34 received the highest distinction of Commissioner’s Honor Roll for achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Of the five Hartford teams eligible for the Fall Academic Honor Roll, the women’s soccer team led the way with 18 student-athletes honored, nine of whom were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The men’s soccer team led on the male side with 16 student-athletes named to the honor roll. The men’s cross country team posted the highest percentage of commissioner’s honors with all but one of its eight members earning the highest distinction.
Rounding out the remaining teams were the volleyball team with 13 on the honor roll, five on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and women’s cross country with 10 student-athletes on the honor roll, five on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Following the fall season, the Hawks also had six student-athletes named to their respective sports’ All-Academic Team. Caitlin Alves, Amélia Pereira and Christiana Lang received the honor from women’s soccer, while James Stamopoulos received the honor for men’s soccer. Rounding out the All-Academic Team honors were Kami Nethersole from the volleyball team and Andrew Chalmers from the men’s cross country team.
The fall honor roll success follows a record semester in the classroom for the Hawks' 367 student-athletes who combined for a 3.18 cumulative grade point average. In addition to the record GPA, 67 percent of the student-athletes finished with a 3.0 or higher, while 130 of those student-athletes earned a 3.5 or higher. Finally, 17 Hawks, also a record number, posted a 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester.
The America East is proud to have one of the most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team composed of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 20 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors, and sports information directors. Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes his/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the Academic Cup is awarded to the school with the highest cumulative GPA among its student-athletes for that academic year.
