Elizabeth Deer ‘12 Earns Honorable Mention in Essay Contest
University of Hartford student Elizabeth Deer '12 earned an “Honorable Mention” for her essay “Battle of the Sexes: Land Versus Sea Edition,” in the Williams-Mystic Essay Contest in Honor of Joseph Conrad.
Williams-Mystic is the maritime studies program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport.
In a press release announcing the essay contest winners, Williams-Mystic described Deer’s essay as “a careful and intelligent piece, working with well-known maritime literature text in a fresh, compelling fashion.”
The annual essay contest is intended to encourage writing about the world’s oceans and major water bodies. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was one of the greatest maritime authors, having written both fiction (Typhoon) and nonfiction (The Mirror of the Sea). Mystic Seaport owns and maintains the tall ship Joseph Conrad (1882), which is a historic ship that circumnavigated the world with young people.
