End of Semester and Move-Out Theft Prevention Tips
The end of the semester is finally here. With the heavy load we tend to put on ourselves during finals, we ease our judgment when it comes to personal safety. Also with move-out around the corner, the Department of Public Safety Crime Prevention would like to provide you with prevention tips.
Spring Semester Final Exams
With the tension of finals during the spring semester, laptops and textbooks are very common targets for thefts. The following are tips to help you stay safe and safeguard your belongings.
• Try not to leave your property unattended. Others may misinterpret your intentions, and think you are abandoning the items.
• Utilize lockers in areas where they are available, such as the library. Use laptop wire and desktop locks when available.
• Keep your valuables on your person at all times. For example: money, jewelry, wallet, cell phone.
Spring Semester Move-Out
• Lock your car whenever it is unattended. Even if you are loading the car and just going back inside for another box, lock the doors. Thieves have been known to monitor areas and can move quickly on unattended property.
• Do not prop doors to residence halls or rooms during move-out. While it is inconvenient during move-out to have to stop and open doors, it is inconsiderate to allow off-campus thieves, who are well aware that items are largely unattended at this time, into living spaces.
• Report dumpster divers. Not only is dumpster diving against University policy, often people who are on campus looking for free items do not limit their searches to dumpsters and items marked as discarded.
The Department of Public Safety wishes you a safe and wonderful summer!
