Suissa Profiled in Hartford Courant, Commencement and Accreditation Stories Get Coverage, Kelly in New York Times, and More

Nicole Suissa, a member of the University’s Class of 2012 who graduated magna cum laude and with University honors with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Arts and Sciences, was profiled in a story on the front page of the “CT Now” section of the Hartford Courant on Sunday, May 20. The story highlighted Suissa’s efforts to overcome financial and personal obstacles to earn her degree. Suissa is now headed to Penn State University to attend law school. Other media coverage of the University’s Commencement Weekend ceremonies included audio clips from U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal’s address on Sunday on WTIC Radio (1080 AM) throughout the late afternoon and evening on Sunday, West Hartford Patch.com featured an article and a gallery of photographs on its site on Monday, May 21, as did West Hartford News.com. In addition, the Commencement ceremonies were previewed on WCBS Radio in New York and in the Boston Globe on Saturday, May 19, and mentioned in local Commencement round-ups on Fox CT, NBC Connecticut and WTNH-News Channel 8 on Sunday and Monday, May 20 and 21. There was also a write-up on Stamford Patch.com. Also, the University’s undergraduate Commencement ceremony was put on the Huffington Post and Sen. Blumenthal’s address will be broadcast on C-SPAN.

The news that the University had received a 10-year continuation of its accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges was covered by several media outlets on Wednesday, May 16, and Thursday, May 17. There were mentions on WFSB Channel 3 News and NBC Connecticut on their Wednesday evening broadcasts. There were also stories on Hartford Business Journal.com, West Hartford News.com, and West Hartford Patch.com

Professor Lynne Kelly, director of the School of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences, was quoted in “The Well Column” in the Thursday, May 17, edition of The New York Times in conjunction with a study that researched the reasons people use Facebook and what that says about their personalities. Here is the New York Times column.The results of the study were also included in stories posted on Minyanville.com and WTOP Radio.com.

Hartford Art School senior Stass Shpanin, who just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in painting, was recently award a Fulbright Fellowship for a 10-month graduate research and painting project in Russia. A posting on the “A Blog Supreme” jazz site on National Public Radio on Thursday, May 17, highlighted a new recording of the song “Mr. E,” which was made famous originally by Jackie McLean, the late alto saxophone giant and founder of the McLean Institute of Jazz at The Hartt School. The blog posting, which can be read here, looked at why saxophonist Steve Lehman chose to use this song to pay tribute to his idol, Jackie McLean.
