Pearlman Publishes Book on Mothers of Lesbians and Transgender Children
Sarah F. Pearlman, associate professor emerita of clinical psychology, is the author of Mother-Talk: Conversations with Mothers of Lesbian Daughters and FTM Transgender Children, recently published by Demeter Press.
Mother-Talk is a collection of stories of 24 mothers – 12 who found out a daughter was a lesbian and 12 who learned that a child, once a biological female, was planning to transition to male – capturing the complexity of coming to terms with the loss of a daughter who has changed sex or an anticipated relationship with a daughter, now a lesbian, who lives in a different world and will lead a different life.
Pearlman was selected by the American Psychological Association Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues (Division 44) as the recipient of the 2011 Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution. She taught in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology for many years, now lives in the Boston area, and is active in LGBTQ elder organizations.
