Seven-Point Week Nets Pereira Conference Honors
Senior striker Amélia Pereira scored her third America East weekly honor as a Hawk when she was named the Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Pereira collected seven points on three goals and one assist over a pair of games last week.
A native of Madeira Island, Portugal, Pereira scored the only goal in the Hawks 2-1 loss to Yale, while she added two goals and an assist in a 5-2 rout of Saint Joseph's.
Her first goal of the week came with the help of fellow classmate Caitlin Alves, who sent a cross about one yard off the end line, where Pereira broke free of her defender and was able to easily chip in a shot in the eighth minute.
On Sunday afternoon, Pereira's first goal came as part of a stretch where the Hawks scored three goals in five minutes to take an early 3-0 advantage against Saint Joseph's. Pereira's first marker in the contest came 76 seconds after fellow classmate Caroline Dixon scored two straight as she connected with rookie Sidney Spremullo for a header in the 17th minute. Spremullo's first assist was a cross from the right side of the keeper that found Pereira waiting a few yards off the end line for the easy header.
Pereira struck again in the 60th minute when she connected with another freshman, Elise Galipo, for an insurance tally. Galipo and Pereira had a two-on-two breakaway opportunity and after passing back-and-forth, Pereira ended up winning a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper with her shot deflecting off the right upright and into the opposite corner.
For the season, Pereira's seven points (a goal is worth two points statistically, an assist is worth one point) lis a team high, one point better than Dixon, who has scored three goals, and two points ahead of Galipo, who has a goal and three assists.
Overall for her three-year career, Pereira has 14 goals and 13 assists.
