Hartford Fire Dept. to Conduct Mock Dorm Room Fire on Tuesday
The Hartford Fire Department (HFD), in partnership with the University of Hartford, will conduct a “Dormitory Burn Demonstration” on Tuesday, Sept. 18, beginning at 10 a.m., in the K-Visitor parking lot, weather permitting.
As part of the demonstration, HFD will set fire to two mock dormitory rooms—one equipped with sprinklers and one without—to show how quickly a fire can spread when it is not suppressed and how much damage can be done.
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to come and learn about fire safety. The Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office will provide fire safety tips and information about ways that students can reduce fire risks in their residences.
This will be the second year that HFD has partnered with the University of Hartford to present this kind of demonstration as part of National Campus Fire Safety Month.
Hartford Fire Department officials note that the city has experienced more than 150 fires in student residences since 2000, and many of those have occurred in off-campus housing or in fraternity/sorority housing.
