Two in a Row for Men's Soccer's Simms
For the second time in as many weeks, University of Hartford freshman Javoni Simms has been tabbed the America East men's soccer Rookie of the Week. Simms added two more goals, helping lead the Hawks to a perfect 2-0 week while advancing to 5-3-0 overall.
Simms scored in each of Hartford's victories to extend his team's winning streak to three games. The Hawks are currently one of the hottest teams in the America East, having won five of their last six matches.
Against UMass, Simms got his week going by netting his fifth goal of the year in a 3-2 victory. His marker, which tied up the game at 1 in the 57th minute, was sparked by a heads-up defensive play. After intercepting a pass in the backfield, Simms beat the Minutemen's back line and reached the back of the net.
Simms continued his goal-scoring rally this past weekend at Siena when he scored the lone goal in the Hawks' double-overtime victory. After forcing a turnover on a deflection, he netted the golden goal by beating the Saints' goalkeeper with a low shot to the far corner just 56 seconds into the second extra session.
The team's top scorer with 12 points, Simms ranks second among conference leaders with six goals on the season. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, he has scored in four consecutive matches for the Hawks and has recorded three game-winning tallies.
