Through its Laura Johnson Initiative, a leadership program for women faculty and staff, the Women's Education and Leadership Fund (WELFund) identifies women leaders and women with leadership potential and offers them opportunities to enhance their knowledge, skills and connections. Through monthly learning sessions, the fourth cohort of the Laura Johnson Initiative will participate in an innovative leadership training program, meet one another and significant women leaders, and gain exposure to higher level decision making within the University and beyond. Thanks to the generosity of WELFund’s donors, there is no cost to participants.

Since 2008, 43 female faculty and staff in three cohorts, from six of the University’s colleges and more than 20 different departments, have participated. In each of its first three cohorts, this popular program succeeded in building leadership and fostering greater community on campus.

Requirements for participants:

Monthly Learning Sessions
12/7, 1/25, 2/22, 3/15, 4/19, 5/3, and 6/7
12 to 3 p.m.

Campus Project or Personal Development Program
Whether selecting a mentor, serving as a mentor, or devising a project aimed at enhancing some aspect of campus life, participants will be challenged to deepen and expand their own impact in the model of Laura Johnson, former dean and president of Hartford College for Women (HCW), who embodied leadership and instilled confidence in the many HCW students whose lives she touched.

Since it was established in 2006, WELFund has provided more than $1 million to fund and administer grants and scholarships, and sponsor and facilitate programs for students, faculty (both male and female), and staff. WELFund fosters and supports University of Hartford initiatives to:

• Enhance the education of women

• Empower women to lead

• Enrich the University community and beyond
