Educational Main Street to Host Annual Science Fair for Local Children

University faculty, students, and staff are invited to visit this year’s science fair sponsored by Educational Main Street (EMS) on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Konover Campus Center. Stop by while you’re on your lunch walk or at any time during the fair hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Through its annual event, EMS has been in the forefront of the effort to expose and engage younger Hartford area students to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) studies. More than 400 fourth- and fifth-graders from the Hartford area are expected to visit the University of Hartford to attend the “Wonders of the Human Body Science Fair.” The children will have the opportunity to judge interactive exhibits designed by students in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP).

The unique “reverse” design of the fair (school-age students judging college-age students’ projects) is the key to the success of the annual event. It is also why University community members should stop by. It is simply fun to see the excitement on the faces of the children as they participate in the activities of each exhibit. One of the popular choices each year is the self-directed, interactive virtual tour of the digestive system, heart, skeleton and other body parts.

Each student will leave the science fair with new knowledge of “The Wonders of the Human Body” and will receive a souvenir bag with a grade level appropriate book on the functions of the human body and other health related items. The ENHP winners will be announced during the “Kids Choice Awards” ceremony at the end of the fair. Watch out Department of Education, Rehabilitation Sciences is ready to reclaim the title they’ve held in the past!
