Coleman to Discuss Her Book on Financing Strategies for Women-owned Firms

Coleman will discuss her book, "A Rising Tide: Financing Strategies for Women-Owned Firms."

Susan Coleman, professor of finance in the Barney School of Business, will talk about the increasingly important role of women in the economy on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. in Wilde Auditorium.

Coleman will focus her remarks on entrepreneurship and the growing number of women-owned businesses, as discussed in her new book, A Rising Tide: Financing Strategies for Women-Owned Firms (co-authored by Alicia M. Robb, Stanford University Press, 2012). This book details the financial strategies used by successful women entrepreneurs in a broad range of industries.

Fox CT’s Rachel Lutzker '99 will moderate the discussion, which will include questions from the audience. The event, sponsored by Women's Education and Leadership Fund (WELFund), is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

Copies of Coleman's book will be available for purchase and signing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 7.8 million women-owned firms in the United States in 2007, generating $1.2 trillion in revenues and providing employment for 7.6 million people.

Coleman is known for her extensive research in such areas as small business finance and entrepreneurial finance, with a focus on access to capital for women-owned and minority-owned businesses. She is co-founder of the University's Center for Personal Financial Responsibility, which promotes financial literacy among students. Coleman has been quoted in a variety of newspapers, from the Hartford Courant to the Washington Post, and has also shared her expertise in local television news stories.
