George F. Blett, assistant professor of academic strategies, Hillyer College, gave a presentation on March 7 at the 17th annual conference of TASS (Teaching Academic Survival Skills), held at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Blett's presentation was titled “Institutional Responsibility: Are Colleges Doing Too Much, or Too Little, for First-Year Students?”. It focused on Tinto’s Model of Student Development, particularly on the social dimensions of learning and how universities can build communities based on clear expectations, accessible support structures, and academic challenge.

Randi Ashton-Pritting, director, University Libraries, was the keynote speaker at the recent Black Caucus of the American Library Association Connecticut Affiliate (BCALA-CT) meeting on March 8 at the Hartford Public Library. Her speech, “Me? A Librarian? Why Not!” discussed education, the importance of the master’s in library science, and the role librarians play in the quest for information.
