For the second time in a week, the University inaugurated a new, state-of-the art athletics field on Saturday.

The University opened its new softball field with a brief, pre-game celebration in which former players and members of the University community threw ceremonial first pitches. Among the past players who took part in the “first pitch” ceremony were Karen Mazzarella (softball class of 1980) and Liz Nadeau (softball class of 2002).

Following the ceremony, the softball team played its first-ever game on the new turf field against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. UMBC won that game, but the Hawks came back on Sunday to win the final game of the series.

Last Wednesday, the University opened its new baseball field – the first baseball field on campus since 1985. Unlike the baseball team, the softball team has had a home field on campus, but it was in need of repair. Last season the softball team played its home games at Central Connecticut State University as construction on the new field got under way.

Both the baseball and softball fields are part of the University’s Home Field Advantage campaign. The first phase of the campaign also included the recent renovation of Al-Marzook Field, which is used for soccer and lacrosse. The next phase will include the construction of an eight-lane track surrounding an all-purpose field.
