Film Screening: Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines

The film "Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines" will be shown on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Mali I auditorium.

The University will host a screening of the film Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Mali I auditorium (Dana 201).

The screening is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The program is presented by Connecticut Humanities and the Women's Education and Leadership Fund (WELFund), and co-sponsored by Connections Health Education and Wellness Center; the Humanities Center and the Distinguished Teaching Humanist of the College of Arts & Sciences; Women for Change; and the Summer Bridge Women’s Leadership Program.

Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines is an independent documentary by director Kristy Guevara-Flanagan exploring the representation of female superheroes in the male-dominated superhero genre. The film traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. More than a comic book character, Wonder Woman is a cultural icon that ignited the creation of a generation of strong female characters—the Bionic Woman, Sarah Connor, Buffy the Vampire Slayer—and who remains a role model for young women all over the world.

Created in the 1940s, Wonder Woman quickly became an equal in the male-dominated superhero world, and was an immediate hit with women who were entering the wartime workforce. Guevara-Flanagan's energetic documentary is an enlightening chronicle of the impact of Wonder Woman. In interviews with admirers as diverse as Gloria Steinem and fourth-grade fan Katie Pineda, each share their personal tales of how the Warrior Princess of the Amazon inspired them to become real-life superheroines.
