In Memoriam: Elynore Shapiro
Elynore “Ely” Shapiro, who served the University of Hartford for 33 years, died on Jan. 2 at the age of 86.
Shapiro worked at the University from 1973 to 2006, serving as office coordinator for the Student Academic Services office in the College of Arts and Sciences.
“She was so great with the students. They just loved her,” said Chuck Colarulli, associate provost and dean of undergraduate studies. “Ely was wonderful – positive, happy, and always full of life.”
“Those of us who knew her admired her strength, wit, and elegance,” A&S Dean Joseph Voelker wrote in an email to the College’s faculty and staff.
Lynne Kelly, professor and director of the School of Communication, A&S, said “Ely took her role in the Academic Services Office of the College of Arts & Sciences very seriously and was thoroughly professional and courteous in her interactions with faculty and students. Students who visited that office needed academic help in one form or another, and Ely made them feel welcomed and at ease.
“Ely was also well known among the faculty for her sense of humor and no-nonsense approach to life, and her zest for life,” Kelly added. “Ely Shapiro helped make the University of Hartford a fun and caring place to work, and when she retired her absence was felt.”
