Provost's Office Announces Engaged Learning Fellows for 2013
The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce the awarding of two Engaged Learning Fellows for 2012-13. These faculty members have been given a course release during the spring of 2013 or a summer stipend in order to prepare to implement an engaged learning strategy in one or more classes.
Engaged learning refers to any instructional strategy that encourages students to seek and discover new knowledge by exploring authentic questions and problems. Engaged learning strategies include but are not limited to service-learning, problem-based learning, and learning communities.
Brian Dorn
Computer Science
College of Arts and Sciences
Professor Dorn will establish a community of practice of undergraduate research students working alongside him in his research lab, the Computational Environments for Learning (CEL) laboratory. Students in the lab will take on a variety of research tasks involving the prototyping, deployment, and evaluation of new software to promote collaborative learning in a variety of traditional, hybrid, flipped, and online courses.
Donald Jones
Rhetoric and Professional Writing
College of Arts and Sciences
Professor Jones will assess the effectiveness of a new set of readings for first-year writing courses designed to promote greater student engagement in and involvement with the readings. The collection of readings will include six thematic chapters and six instructional chapters on topics such as the reading process, the writing process, and academic honesty.
