Tips to Stay Healthy as Flu Cases Increase
As the number of flu cases continues to increase in Connecticut and on campus, the University’s Health Services Department is offering tips to stay healthy.
The first flu cases appeared on campus shortly before winter break, according to Mary Norris, administrative director of Health Services. She predicts that the number of flu cases will rise once students return from winter break next week. Health Services (located in the Sports Center) will be able to administer a limited number of flu shots when it reopens for clinical care on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Symptoms of the flu include sudden onset of fever or chills and cough or sore throat. Some cases include body aches, headache, diarrhea, or vomiting.
Students who are sick should call Health Services at 860.768.6601 to make an appointment to be seen. If you are diagnosed with the flu, Health Services will notify Student Affairs, which in turn will notify your professors. Students who are diagnosed off-campus are encouranged to notify Health Services. In addition, arrangements can be made for food delivery using Dining Service's "Get Well Buddy" form.
HRD Executive Director Lisa Belanger says faculty and staff should use their judgment when determining if they are fit to report to work.
Health officials have several recommendations to prevent the spread of the flu:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand cleaner if soap and water are not available. (Hand sanitizer dispensers are available in the dining halls and entrances to academic buildings).
• Cover your coughs and sneezes.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick and keep your distance from others if you are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
