LaRocco is Founder and Chair of DEC's New Special Interest Group on Leadership

The Division for Early Childhood (DEC) is one of 17 divisions of the Council for Exceptional Children – the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. DEC attracts individuals who work with or on behalf of children with special needs, birth through age eight, and their families. Its mission is to promote policies and advance evidence-based practices to support the optimal development of young children with special needs.
DEC has established several Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that can be accessed online. SIGs provide an opportunity for members to discuss a common interest, share ideas, get feedback from others, and have access to additional resources. SIGs also provide an avenue for DEC to gather information and to broadcast important information to members.
Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership Diana LaRocco, ENHP, is the founder of DEC’s Special Interest Group on Leadership and its first chair. As such, she is playing a prominent role in a national summit on leadership in early childhood/special education that will take place October 16, 2013 at DEC’s 29th Annual International Conference on Young Children with Disabilities and their Families in San Francisco. The summit will to bring together a national cadre of researchers, faculty, program administrators, teachers, and other personnel, and families of children who receive special education services to participate in a focus group discussion about the present state of and future needs for leadership in early childhood special education.
LaRocco has held significant national leadership positions in DEC, including being chair of the Governmental Relations Committee for six years. This past fall she was invited to speak as part of a panel on leadership at the 28th Annual International Conference on Young Children with Disabilities and their Families held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions is proud to recognize a faculty member who has become a strong voice for the role of leadership in early childhood education of young children with disabilities.
