Accolades: Laurence Gould, Diana LaRocco
Posted 4/14/2006
Laurence I. Gould, professor of physics, A&S, was a guest of the Quantum group at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge during spring break last month. He gave two invited talks. One talk, "Albert Einstein: Myth & Magic," was for a general physics colloquium (Gould has also given that talk for the general public), and it drew 100-200 people from across the university. Gould's other talk at LSU was "A Causal Program for Quantum Physics: De Broglie to Bohm" for the Quantum seminar. About 20 physicists, including undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students, attended.
Gould's biography has been requested for inclusion in the ninth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering (2006 – 2007).
Diana J. LaRocco, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, ENHP, gave two peer-reviewed presentations this month. She and her colleague, Deborah A. Bruns, assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, have been examining how early career faculty, who entered academia as experienced professionals (e.g., teachers, school administrators), understand their entry into and initial experiences in academia.
The first presentation, entitled “Practitioner to Professor: Second Career Academics' Perceptions of Entry into the Academy,” was given at the 2006 Council for Exceptional Children Annual Convention and Expo in Salt Lake City, Utah. The second presentation, entitled, “So You Want to Be a Professor: Reflections of Experienced Educational Professionals who have Transitioned to Second Careers in Higher Education,” was given at the American Educational Research Association’s 2006 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Calif.
