Russell Places Fifth in Men's Golf Spring Opener
The University of Hartford men's golf team turned in a tenth-place finish at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, hosted by George Mason, in its first tournament of the spring season. The Hawks posted a 308 in Sunday's final round at the Mission Inn Resort course to notch a three-round combined score of 917.
Evan Russell led the Hawks throughout the weekend. The freshman from Grantham, N.H., shot an even-par 72 over the final 18 holes to finish tied for fifth in the tournament's individual standings. Russell carded a 54-hole 216 to finish even-par for the tournament.
Fellow freshman Will Betts finished second on the Hartford roster over the course of the weekend. Betts carded a 79 on Sunday to finish with a score of 228 for three rounds.
Wally Gonzalez had his best round of the tournament during Sunday's final round. Gonzalez navigated the final 18 holes in 77 strokes to post a 54-hole score of 239. Sophomores Anthony Vecchiarelli and Dan Yustin both shot 80 on Sunday to finish the tournament with scores of 241 and 242, respectively.
The Hawks will return to the Sunshine State for the Florida Atlantic University Spring Break Championship, March 29-31. The tournament will be played at The Fountains Country Club at Lake Worth, Fla.
