The weekend of April 5-7 was a busy one for the University of Hartford’s Newman Club, which participated in three different community service projects over two days.

In the first project of the weekend, a group of seven Newman Club volunteers (along with the help of three non-members) helped to beautify the grounds of St. Justin’s Church as part of the "Hawk’s Helping Hartford Day of Service" on Friday, April 5.  Volunteers spent two and a half hours raking leaves, picking up trash and spreading good cheer.

Later in the day, the volunteers returned to St. Justin’s after the Hawk’s Helping Hartford event to stock shelves and set up the church’s food pantry.

That Saturday, the Newman Club continued its service at St. Justin’s, but it was geared toward a different group of parishioners—children. Newman Club members put on an Easter egg hunt, as well as other activities including face painting and Bingo, for children attending religious education.  The festive activities provided the children with a small break from their regular classes and provided University students with a fun way to give back.

The Newman Club meets every Sunday in Konover after 4:30 p.m. Mass and dinner.  For more information about Catholic Campus Ministry, stop by GSU 153 or contact Sandi Smith (Campus Minister) at uhacatholicmin@aol.com.
