Russell Sails in Ninth at Navy Invitational
The University of Hartford men's golf team posted a combined 304 in the final round of the Navy Spring Invitational Sunday to finish 11th in the 21-team field. Paired with a first-round team score of 310, the Hawks finished the 36-hole tournament at 614, improving one place in the standings from their first-round spot at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.
Virginia and Pennsylvania tied for first place in the field with matching two-day scores of 599. Hartford's 304 on Sunday was the fourth-best team score in the field during the final round.
Freshman Evan Russell led the Hartford day-two improvement by lowering his first-round card by three strokes through Sunday's 18 holes. Russell turned in a 73 Sunday after shooting a 76 in Saturday's opening round. The freshman from Grantham, N.H., finished the tournament at 149, tied for ninth place in a field of 106 individuals.
Sophomore Dan Yustin and freshman Will Betts also turned in improved scores Sunday. After each shot 78 over the first 18, Yustin shot a 76 Sunday while Betts closed out with a 77. Sophomore Wally Gonzalez, who also shot 78 in the opening round, matched his first-round score with another 78 in his round on Sunday. Classmate Matt Carville finished at 88 for the final 18 holes.
The tournament at the U.S. Naval Academy was the final regular season tournament for the Hartford men. Next up for the Hawks is a trip to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the America Sky Men's Golf Conference Championship. The conference championship is scheduled for April 29-May 1 at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.
