Posted 4/21/2006
Professor Donald Ellis of the School of Communication has been awarded a fellowship from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. The fellows will gather in Israel in May for training in security and diplomatic relations.
The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated exclusively to promoting pluralism, defending democratic values, and confronting the ideologies that drive terrorism.
Kathy McCloskey, associate professor at the Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology (GIPP), attended the Association for Women in Psychology’s (AWP’s) 31st Annual Conference held in Ypsilanti, Mich., from March 31 to April 2, 2006. McCloskey chaired a session titled “Feminist Perspectives Within Academia,” where various presenters discussed creating feminist training environments and transforming standard curriculum into materials that support cultural competence and social justice. She also presented a paper and conducted a structured brainstorming discussion, along with co-author Patricia Rozee, California State University, Long Beach, concerning AWP’s newest social action initiative, “Overcoming Backlash Within Intimate Partner Violence Research.”
During spring break, McCloskey attended demonstration and training sessions held at the Axelsons Gymnastika Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Along with colleagues from the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and representatives from Peaceful Touch-USA, she observed the use of massage therapy in preschool and elementary school milieus as effective primary violence prevention techniques. She is currently the research liaison for Peaceful Touch-USA, where she has designed multiple research methodologies to investigate the effectiveness of importing such innovative violence prevention techniques to U.S. preschools.
