Howie the Hawk needs your financial support as he prepares to "take flight" to raise money for the Special Olympics.

The University of Hartford athletics mascot, Howie the Hawk, will be going “Over the Edge” in May in support of Special Olympics, and he needs your help. The following is a letter from Howie . . .

As Howie, the mascot of the University of Hartford Hawks, I take my earth-bound duties very seriously. I have never wanted to “show off” by displaying my aerial attributes. Throughout the years, I have secretly taken flight when nobody was watching. After games and events, I return to my home without notice. As you know, a bird of my stature needs to avoid the paparazzi at all costs. In May, that will change as I publicly fly for the first time.

On May 10, I will ascend to the top of State House Square and rappel down with my fellow Special Olympics VIPs as we go "Over the Edge." I need your help in making this happen by donating to Special Olympics. You can do so by following the instructions below.

For many years, the University of Hartford has hosted the Eastern Regional Games, which we will do again this year on Saturday, May 11. I have watched with great admiration the kind of opportunities Special Olympics provides their athletes. I am in awe, too, of the tireless efforts of all the volunteers that make it happen. The games are empowering and the joy seen in the faces of athletes is inspiring. We welcome you to come out on May 11 and witness it for yourself.

All of this would not be possible without financial support to the Special Olympics effort. I hope you will join me in my quest to raise $1,000. No donation is too small, although I hope to exceed my goal and ask you to be as generous as you can be. Thank you in advance for your kindness.
