The following projects will be conducted in 2013-14 thanks to grant support from WELFund, The Women’s Education and Leadership Fund.

Beyond Manifest Destiny – A&S Professor William Sanders and Hillyer Professor Mari Firkatian and student Nancy Bencosme ’14 will work with former HCW administrator Miriam Butterworth to translate her Beyond Manifest Destiny research into an online learning tool and teachers’ guide.

CETA Ambassadors Program – CETA Professor Ying Yu will collaborate with her CETA colleagues to develop outstanding student ambassadors within CETA by engaging female CETA students who will be trained to serve as ambassadors. These students will encourage more women to enroll in the STEM fields, where they are currently underrepresented.

Mad About Science Summer STEM Camp Experience will expand its reach in its second summer to encompass two two-week Summerplace sessions offering scholarships for 16 middle school girls interested in STEM. The goal is to keep the students inspired to study STEM in high school and beyond. CETA Professor Mary Arico will conduct the program again with assistance from WELFund, Summerplace, Office of Community Relations and Center for Social Research.

Summer Bridge Women’s Leadership Week will again offer a one-week summer overnight women’s leadership week for participating first-year women from across the University. The program enhances the skill set of entering students and eases the transition from high school.

Women & Art in Africa – A&S Art History Professor Amanda Carlson will engage two students in ethnographic research in Nigeria and Ghana on the role of women in African art.

Founded in 2006, WELFund’s mission is to advance each woman’s potential by fostering and supporting initiatives to:

  • Enhance the education of women
  • Advance women as scholars and as the subject of scholarship
  • Cultivate and sustain women’s leadership skills, and
  • Increase awareness about women as individuals and in communities.

WELFund grants are awarded once a year. Letters of inquiry are accepted in the fall and invited applicants complete full applications in the spring for funding for the following fiscal/academic year. For more information, go to http://hartford.edu/welfund/grants/default.aspx.
