With a score of 208 after three rounds, Evan Russell of the University of Hartford men's golf team hoisted the New England Amateur Championship trophy Thursday afternoon at the Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington, Vt.

Despite a three-over-par 74 during Thursday's final round, Russell finished five under for the tournament, taking the title by one stroke over Rhode Island native Brad Valois.

After finding himself one stroke off the lead after a first-round 68, Russell, who will be entering his sophomore year at UHart this fall, fired a 66 over his second 18 holes to put himself at the front of the pack. He was able to hold off the field through Thursday's final round.

Russell takes home the New England Amateur after a stellar freshman campaign. He led the Hawks with a school-record 73.06 strokes-per-round average, and was named the America Sky Men's Golf Conference Newcomer of the Year. A first- team, all-conference selection, Russell was also selected to the PING All-Northeast Region Team.

Russell is the second Hawk to earn a tournament win this summer. Rising junior Dan Yustin won the Western New York Open in May.

Russell was one of four Hawks playing in the field. He was joined by teammates Anthony Vecchiarelli, Addison Owens, and Matt Carville.
