Accolades: Colleen Kruger
Posted 5/1/2006
Colleen Kruger, director of Continuing and Professional Education with the Career Development Center, was invited to become a member of a state legislative advisory committee, the Youth Futures Policy Team.
The team is a bipartisan legislative working group led by State Rep. Kenneth Green (D-Hartford). Members include both Democratic and Republican legislators and other program or state department directors. The goal of the team is to research, develop, and recommend youth policy to the legislature. Over the next few months, the team will be holding open forums to obtain youth input for future policy in Connecticut.
Kruger recently spoke at one of Green’s press conferences in support of positive youth development initiatives and shared success stories of participants in the Career Development Center youth programs, Project Crecer and The After School Computer Academy. In addition to sharing success stories of former program participants who are now working professionals, she linked youth employability training programs to Connecticut’s economic development.
"Young people who are employed and participating in the economy results in an expanded Connecticut economy. This means more money in the system through income taxes, purchasing power and savings. A work-ready youth population encourages industry to invest in Connecticut," said Kruger.
Kruger is also an active member of the Summer Youth Employment and Learning Program Advocacy Committee, headed up by Capital Workforce Partners. She speaks at area high schools and encourages youth who want to participate in these programs to become civically engaged in the legislative process to make an impact on budget allocation for youth programs.
The Youth Futures Policy Team will recommend state youth policy in September 2006. If you know of a Hartford youth who would like to participate in this process, or become involved in Summer Youth Employment, contact Kruger at 860.768.5634.
