Theresa Vara-Dannen, Ph.D., English department leader at the University High School of Science and Engineering, will have her book, titled Benevolence and Bitterness: the African-American Experience in Nineteenth Century Connecticut, published in the fall by Lexington Books, an imprint of Rowman and Littlefield, a press affiliated with the University of Delaware, Bucknell, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Lehigh.

The book evaluates the public discourse in nineteenth century Connecticut about issues of race, bigotry and civil rights.
