Joseloff Gallery Presents LINES + SPACES
The Joseloff Gallery is proud to launch its Guest Curator Series with LINES + SPACES, a group exhibition featuring the work of five distinguished artists, curated by noted poet and art critic John Yau.
LINES + SPACES will showcase the paintings and drawings of artists Eve Aschheim, Joanne Greenbaum, Christine Hiebert, Steve Roden, and Hanns Schimansky in an exhibition developed by Yau exploring the paradoxes and complexities of the simple line.
The exhibition, which opened Tuesday, will be on view through Oct. 6.
Panel Discussion and Reception on Thursday
There will be a panel discussion moderated by Yau on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Wilde Auditorium, directly followed by a public reception in the Joseloff Gallery from 4 to 7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
The panel discussion will feature LINES + SPACES artists Eve Aschheim and Hanns Schimansky; curator and gallery owner Inga Kondeyne; and artist and Hartford Art School faculty member Power Boothe.
The concept of LINES + SPACES grew from Yau’s interest in the exploration of line as subject matter rather than starting point. Yau chose five spectacular artists for the exhibition, who each use line drawing to investigate; to probe a subject and tease out its meaning.
The new Joseloff Gallery Guest Curator Series is designed to bring individuals who are deeply engaged in today’s art world to the Hartford Art School to inspire students and contribute to the dialogue across campus about current issues in contemporary art. Each guest curator (who may also be an artist, critic, or collector) is invited to curate a group exhibition exploring a specific issue or theme that he or she is passionate about pursuing, but until now may not have had the opportunity to explore. In addition to the exhibition, the guest curator will also write an essay for the exhibition catalog, and initiate a conversation with the Hartford Art School community by presenting a public lecture or moderating a panel discussion related to the theme of the exhibition.
A full-color catalog has been produced in conjunction with the exhibition featuring an essay by guest curator John Yau and an introduction by artist and Hartford Art School faculty member Power Boothe. Please contact the Joseloff Gallery for information on purchasing a catalog, at 860.768.4090 or joseloff@hartford.edu.
Joseloff Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
