At a ceremony in Reykjavik, Iceland, on July 21, University of Hartford President Emeritus Humphrey Tonkin was awarded the annual Friendship Prize of the Chinese Esperanto League (CEL) for his service to the Esperanto movement in China.

Tonkin was president of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) in 1986 when the Association held its annual convention in China for the first time, and he helped facilitate the affiliation of the League with the UEA in 1980. In 2004 he dedicated the Esperanto Grove in Chaoyong Park, Beijing, during UEA’s second convention in China.

China is the second most frequent user of the website lernu.net for learning Esperanto (with some 15,000 registered users), and it possesses a firmly established Esperanto movement, international radio broadcasts, and a newly established Esperanto museum.

The prize was presented by Ma Jisheng, Ambassador of China to Iceland, accompanied by CEL leaders.
