Harrison to Receive 'Torch of Liberty' Award From Anti-Defamation League
President Walter Harrison will be honored as one of several recipients of the Anti-Defamation League's 2013 Torch of Liberty Awards.
The awards will be presented at the 2013 Greater Hartford Torch of Liberty Award Reception and Centennial Gala on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in West Hartford, Conn. Founded in 1913, ADL’s theme in its centennial year is “Imagine A World Without Hate.”
“I am delighted to receive the Torch of Liberty Award on the ADL’s 100th anniversary,” President Harrison said. “As the world’s leading organization in promoting understanding and tolerance among religious, racial, and ethnic groups, ADL has special meaning for me. At the University of Hartford, we are proud to share these goals in a diverse, energetic, and peaceful community of people from throughout the United States and around the world.”
In addition to Harrison, Torch of Liberty Awards will be presented to: Deacon Arthur L. Miller, director of the Office for Black Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese of Hartford and Catholic chaplain at Hartford’s Capital Community College; his wife of 42 years, Sandra Miller, who is the office manager for Small Christian Communities for the Archdiocese of Hartford; and Saud Anwar and his family. Anwar is a founder and co-chair of the American Muslim Peace Initiative, which works to strengthen intrafaith understanding within Islam and interfaith understanding between Islam and other religions.
The Torch of Liberty Award celebrates people who carry on a tradition of community service. "The commitment to philanthropy and public service demonstrated by Dr. Harrison, the Millers and the Anwars epitomizes the Anti-Defamation League’s values and the ideals represented by the Torch of Liberty Award," the ADL said in a press releease.
