Accolades: Judith Houle

Judith Houle, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, presented a paper at the annual conference of the New England Educational Research Organization (NEERO) on April 27, titled “Internships as Authentic Preparation for School Leaders.”
This paper, part of a long-term action research project, examines the administrative internship offered in the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership for those seeking certification as an intermediate supervisor or superintendent of schools.
The research during this phase of the project focused on how the internship experience provided our aspiring educational leaders with opportunities to engage in activities connected to Connecticut’s Standards for School Leaders (CSSL). Former interns and their clinical supervisors were surveyed to see in which of these activities the interns were able to assume a leadership role, participate in the activities, observe them, or not be involved.
Houle also kept field notes from the internship seminars she led over the past year and examined student portfolios for evidence of where interns were enabled to assume leadership or major participatory roles in activities related to the CSSL. The paper presented findings from this research with recommendations for how we can work with our interns and clinical supervisors to ensure that students exercise leadership in authentic contexts during the internship experience and how other programs might wish to examine their experiences.
NEERO is an affiliate of the American Educational Research Association. Houle is a member of the NEERO board of directors, serving as the conference director.
